Republic of the Moon

Space lovers prepare to get all starry eyed. Nearly four decades after humans first walked on the moon, a group of artists is planning to re-examine the relationship between our planet and its only natural satellite by establishing an Earth-based embassy for a Republic of the Moon.
Artists taking part including  Liliane Lijn, Leonid Tishkov, Katie Paterson, Agnes Meyer Brandis, and  We Colonised the Moon. The work combines personal encounters, DIY space plans, imaginary expeditions and new myths for the next space age. Marking the start of its twentieth anniversary year, The Arts Catalyst will animate the exhibition with performances, workshops, music, talks, a pop-up moon shop by super/collider and playful protests against lunar exploitation.
To coincide with the exhibition a manifesto declaring the Moon a temporary autonomous zone, with responses from artists and scientists will be published alongside novelist Tony White’s call to ‘occupy the Moon!’. Events taking place during the exhibitions run include a drop-in family workshop on Sunday January 12 and a late opening of the exhibition on the night of the full moon on Thursday January 16.
