Inside Met Gala 2014 Party

Prabal Gurung felt a snag on his pantleg and looked up to find Idina Menzel, latched on by a sequin. Menzel is used to wearing an unwieldy dress: Her character Elphaba in the Broadway production of Wicked wore a dress with a train, and Menzel had to practice walking backwards in it across the stage. "The key is to kick it," she said.
Brie Larson also took a comfortable route. She wore a gilded custom Prada ensemble. "They painted it with 20 percent gold," she said, looking 100 percent lovely. She later chatted with fellow indie actress Greta Gerwig, and the two made plans to go dancing.
And though Hailee Steinfeld’s Prabal Gurung dress had a long train, she admitted it was actually the most comfortable Met Gala dress she’s ever worn. What was her secret? "No corset."
Nearby, a collection of models were wearing the most architectural and James-like dresses of all. Giovanna Battaglia’s long braid was spiked with little roses and Dianna Agron eyed it with a little longing in her eyes. No need to smell the roses though—she was ready to go still shorter. Lupita Nyong’o nearby—wearing her hair in a little roll with an elegant twenties-style velvet headband—made a very convincing case for a crop.

After dinner (where Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Sokratis Romilios, Jeff Koons, Andrew Garfield, and Waterhouse were spotted chatting and laughing), Frank Ocean took the stage with the Charles James Orchestra, and all of the musicians were outfitted with top hats. Ocean opened with "Super Rich Kids," which got Zoë Kravitz and Nicole Richie swaying. At the end of the song, he sidled up to the mic and warmed every heart in the room by wishing his mom (his date) a happy birthday. The American Wing sparkled with stage lights and chandeliers, outdazzled only perhaps by the rhinestones in Erykah Badu’s massive Givenchy hat. Once Diplo began a DJ set, one of the calmest rooms in the Met was transformed into a bona fide rave. Lena Dunham kicked off her shoes. Kristen Wiig started dancing with Alexa Chung, and Alexander Wang gestured to A$AP Rocky and Chanel Iman to join him on the dance floor. How could they say no?
