Alan Turner at Mitchell Algus Gallery

April 25 – May 31, 2015
The Mitchell Algus Gallery presents an exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Alan Turner opening on Saturday April 25 and continuing through Sunday May 31, 2015. A reception for the artist will be held on the day of the opening from 6 to 8pm.
Alan Turner’s art is one of the most diverse, meticulous, and significant if under-known bodies of work created in New York in the last 40 years. The current exhibition focuses on two periods in Turner’s oeuvre: the large- to medium-scale paintings and drawings from the mid-1980s to mid-1990s that reconfigure the body in psychologically fraught ways, and the intimately-scaled pencil on canvas works made from 2007 to the present that focus on the ramshackle cardboard shelters that were (and still are) a common sight downtown where Turner has lived since the early 1970s.
