About the event
This Autumn, Battersea Art Station opens its doors to showcase a selection of over 400 pieces of art celebrating the iconic Battersea Power Station, the first time both amateur and professional artists from around the world will be exhibiting their Power Station creations all in one place for the general public to enjoy. The free exhibition will take place at the Grade II* listed arts venue, Battersea Arts Centre (BAC) over the weekend of Friday 25th (preview only) – Sunday 27th September 2015.
Battersea Power Station has always had huge cultural status both in London and globally. Since opening in the 1930’s it has cemented its place in pop culture, appearing on Pink Floyd's Animals album cover, The Dark Knight film and on bespoke Converse trainer designs.
A curated selection of artworks by over 350 artists, from striking black and white photography, poetry, film, contemporary neon interpretations, classic oil paintings and cast iron sculptures will be on display. With prices starting from £10 up to £10k and free public access over the three days the weekend will help bring accessible and affordable art to the public. Three local arts charities will be benefiting directly from the event with 20% of proceeds all sales going to BAC Beatbox Academy, Theatre503 & World Heart Beat Music Academy.
The Preview on Friday 25th Sept will be when the ‘Best in Class’ winners in the three different categories are announced. A panel including renowned artist and BBC’s ‘The Big Painting Challenge’ judge, Lachlan Goudie will award the cash prizes (£1k for professionals & £500 for amateur classes) as well as the opportunity for the artists to display their art in a public space at Circus West, the first phase of the development. As a Preview event, no art will be available to purchase on Friday 25th September but the exhibition will still remain open for the public.
The weekend will also feature a number of exciting activities and entertainment for adults and children alike including a 3D LEGO Big Build of Battersea Power Station, special art works from the Royal College of Art and pieces from the Wandsworth Borough Collection, live printmaking with ‘Print Wagon’, musical performances, special Family Saturday activities including BAC’s ‘The Bees Knees’ indoor play space, on site architectural photography by View Pictures, a BPS-inspired brunch and Sunday film screenings. Visitors will also have the opportunity to learn more about the future plans of the Battersea Power Station development. BAC’s well-known Scratch Bar will have food & drinks available to purchase for guests throughout the weekend.
